Soft Surfaces as a Breeding Ground for Bacteria at Home.
A recent survey by the Hygiene Council found that over 61% of the population has either never gotten their sofas sanitized or professionally cleaned, or have done so only once or twice in the years that they’ve owned them. This is an alarming percentage considering the number of bacteria and indoor pollutants that are harbored on these soft surfaces in the home.
In addition to your run-of-the mill pollen, dust mites, pollen and dander, upholstered surfaces can carry a multitude of endotoxins – toxins released from the cell walls of bacteria that are brought in on your clothes, pets and shoes. These endotoxins are a major source of asthma and allergies even for folks who generally do not suffer from either.
The National Institutes of Health said that in the homes sampled, these endotoxins were found most to be most abundant in the most-used rooms in the home – the kitchen and living room. And, since these endotoxins are only released upon disruption of the cell walls of the bacteria, the high traffic and frequent movement in those rooms is what causes the problems.
Since improper cleaning can also upset endotoxins, it is recommended that a professional home cleaning be done at least twice per year.
